Changes to Trustee and Executive Committee Nominating Process

It’s November at the World Service Office (WSO), and guess what? Right now, Al‑Anon members with resumes submitted, potentially from your Area, are preparing for the next step in the Trustee and At-Large Executive Committee (EC) member nominating processes.

Trustee candidates have already completed the first phase, having had their resumes thoughtfully scored by both Delegates and Trustees before being selected for a January interview with the Board. Additionally, these candidates are collecting references from someone familiar with their skills through Al‑Anon service, business, or other volunteer efforts. Meanwhile, EC applicants are waiting for their next step in January, when they interview with the Nominating Committee.

The Trustee nominating process has evolved significantly in the last couple of years. Most recently, the Trustee resume was transformed into an application. The At-Large EC selection process is on the verge of similar evolution, including a new At-Large Executive Committee Member role description and application. Intrigued? With Clarity Comes Opportunity—Serving as Trustee

Have you ever considered applying to serve as a member of the Board of Trustees or wondered what’s required for the position? In 2021, the World Service Conference discussed this topic and identified that potential candidates were seeking to understand detailed information about the role, the required time commitments, and the skills necessary to serve. This conversation led to the development of an updated Trustee Role Description and a new Trustee application, which the Board approved in January 2024.

The new Trustee application includes an Al‑Anon service resume, asks skills-and principle-based questions of those applying, and highlights the agreements members make when joining the Board. The new Trustee application is now available at al-anon.org/trustee If you might be interested in serving worldwide Al‑Anon and are a member with at least ten years of continuous Al‑Anon/Alateen participation, including service beyond the group level, who meets the other requirements, we are excited for you to read more information on our website and submit your application to serve.

In 2023, the World Service Conference approved the development of a new piece of Conference Approved Literature (CAL) on sponsorship and service sponsorship made up of personal stories from Al-Anon members. Since then, a writing guideline has been developed, approved, and translated into French and Spanish. Please share this writing guideline, use it to facilitate writing workshops, and consider submitting your own experience, strength, and hope on this important topic.
